Here's a brief history of one of Costa Blanca's main cities. The Torrevieja Salt Flats date back to before the13thcentury and were an ancient royal possession. Until 1802 in Torrevieja there was only an old guard tower (which gives the place its place name) and some salt workers' houses. The Plaza de la Constitución But in 1803, KingCharles IV decreed the transfer of the administration of the Reales Salinas from La Mata to the location of the current center of Torrevieja, and the construction of houses was authorized.In 1829, the town was completely destroyed by an earthquake and later rebuilt. The first buildings were introduced by the Iberians, constructed on the higher grounds. The Penyal d'Ifac is a massive limestone outcrop emerging from the sea and linked to the shore by rock debris. It is home to numerous rare plants, including a number of endemic species, and over 300 species of animals, and a nesting site for colonies of sea birds and other birds. Calpe at sunrise Rising to 332 metres high, it was known to the Phoenicians as the Northern Rock, to distinguish it from its southern counterpart, the Rock of Gibraltar.
