THE AREA Historically, Rojales developed because it was for centuries the last last crossing point of the River Segura before reaching Guardamar amd the Mediterranean. The town now thrives due to it's cosmpolitan populous but has also kept its important cultural legacy in its numerous museums and theatres. The famous King Charles III crossing the Segura at Rojales Much work has been carried out in the Cuevas del Rodeo neighbourhood, currently an area for artisanal practices. The district also contains the fascinating and popular "shell house". The existence of several long-standing residential developments has given rise to important population groups from other European countries, the majority being English and Germans. The Rojales 'Shell House', on the hillside close to the artisanal cave houses History tells us that the first human settlements date back to the end of the Neolithic, between the 4th and 3rd millennium. The town gained its independence from Guardamar in 1773, after a payment of 1500 maravedíes of fleece (coins of the time) was made to King Charles III of Spain. Since 2000 (especially), the municipality has shown great population growth with the arrival of numerous European citizens. Indeed, it has become the municipality with the highest percentage of registered foreigners in all of Spain, with over 70% of the population being from overseas.
